Payamar Pagoda ( AD 6th-7th Century)

Built in the early part of the Thayekhittaya Pyu period. Payamar pagoda is contemporary of Payagyi pagoda to which it is similar in design. It is one of the earliest pagodas in Myanmar. Though different in shape from Baw Baw Gyi, it is another prototype of later Myanmar Pagodas.

Oral tradition and old chronicles say that it is one of nine pagodas built by King Duttabaung, that it enshrines the finder and toe nails and collar bones relics of the Buddha, and that its former name was “Tha-rin-mar” which was later change to “Payamar Pagoda”.
